Circle Goal: a compact, no-running football game

2 Min Read

A circle of players, legs spread wide to form a goal, hands interlaced to defend it, and a ball that can strike from any direction at any moment. Circle Goal is a compact, no-running version of football that fits into a surprisingly small indoor space.

What you need

A soft junior football. A group of up to 30 players, forming a circle.

How to play

Everyone forms a circle, holding hands, then turns to face inward and spaces their feet apart enough to leave a gap between their legs, wide enough for a ball to pass through, with neighbouring feet touching to close any gaps around the circle. Players release hands but interlace them again in front of their body, using interlaced hands only, not separate arms, to defend the gap between their own legs. The ball is kicked around inside the circle, and every player is simultaneously defending their own gap while trying to score by knocking the ball through someone else’s. Any player who lets the ball through their legs is eliminated and steps out of the circle, which tightens with each elimination until one player remains.

Safety notes

This game can get surprisingly intense in a small circle, so it is worth reminding players to stay controlled rather than kicking with full force, especially as the circle shrinks and players are standing closer together.

Why it works

Because every player is simultaneously attacking and defending at once, with no pause between turns, this game stays fast and engaging throughout, and the shrinking circle as players are eliminated keeps raising the stakes right up to the final two.
