One whispered sentence, passed ear to ear around a circle, and the inevitably garbled, often hilarious version that comes out the other end. The Whisper Line is the classic telephone game, and it never really stops being funny.
What you need
Nothing but a group of up to 30 players, sitting in a circle.
How to play
Everyone sits in a circle. One player is chosen to start and invents a short message, usually one meaningful sentence, and pretends to dial it on an imaginary phone before whispering it once into the ear of the player beside them. That player whispers what they heard, as best they understood it, to the next player along, and so on around the entire circle. The last player to receive the message says it out loud for everyone to hear, and compares it with the original, which has usually drifted into something quite different along the way.
Variations
Send two different messages around the circle at once, one travelling left and one travelling right, which adds a layer of concentration as players have to keep the two separate.
Safety notes
None beyond keeping the circle close enough that whispering is genuinely necessary rather than loud enough for neighbours to overhear and shortcut the game.
Why it works
The gap between the original message and the final version is the entire point, and a group laughing together at how badly a simple sentence got mangled is a pretty reliable way to bond a group that might not know each other well yet.
