One chair fewer than the number of players, music that could stop at any second, and a mad scramble for a seat every time it does. Musical Chairs barely needs an introduction, and it remains reliably fun exactly because everyone already half-knows the rules.
What you need
Chairs or mats, one fewer than the number of players. Music, or simply your own voice and a clap. Up to 15 players.
How to play
Arrange the chairs or mats in a row, one fewer than the number of players. Play music (or sing, clap, or bang a drum if there is no music available) while everyone walks, dances, or jogs around the row. When the music stops, or the clapping suddenly cuts out, everyone scrambles to sit in an open seat. Whoever is left without one is out for that round, one chair is removed, and the game continues with one fewer player and one fewer seat each time, until a single winner remains for the final chair.
Safety notes
The scramble for seats can get physical if the group gets competitive, so it’s worth setting a clear no-pushing rule from the start. A soft mat works just as well as a chair and removes any risk of a hard fall.
Why it works
The unpredictability of exactly when the music will stop is what makes this game work, and the gradual thinning of both players and seats builds real tension toward the final round, even though everyone already knows roughly how it will end.
