An inner circle runs, an outer circle chases, and when the signal comes to stop, everyone scrambles for a spot, with exactly one person left without one. Steal the Spot is a fast-paced circle game that keeps the whole group moving and guessing until the very last second.
Why this helps
The unpredictable timing of the stop signal keeps every player genuinely alert the entire time they’re running, since nobody knows exactly when the scramble for a spot will begin. That sustained, uncertain anticipation is good, playful practice at staying focused through an entire activity rather than only at a predictable, expected moment.
What you need
Nothing but an open space and enough players to form two circles, one inside the other, with an equal number in each.
How to play
Form two circles, a smaller one inside a larger one, with each player in the inner circle having exactly one player directly behind them in the outer circle. Stand in the centre of both circles yourself.
The outer circle starts jogging around the inner circle while you call out a repeated phrase, building anticipation. When you suddenly call “stop” and quickly step in front of one of the inner-circle players, every outer-circle runner also scrambles to get in front of an inner-circle player as fast as they can. Since there’s one fewer spot than runners, exactly one player is left without a place, and that player moves to the centre to lead the next round.
Safety notes
Make sure the space is large enough for everyone to run safely, and set a clear rule against any pushing or grabbing during the scramble for a spot.
Why the uncertainty is the whole point
If players knew exactly when the stop signal was coming, the game would lose most of its energy, the real fun and the real attentiveness both come from genuinely not knowing when the moment to scramble will arrive. That sustained unpredictability is what keeps a simple running game feeling fresh round after round.
A chanted phrase, a sudden stop, and a scramble for one fewer spot than there are runners is a fast, simple circle game that reliably gets a whole group moving and genuinely paying attention, right up until the very last second.
