Shape the Star: a linked-chain group puzzle

2 Min Read

A chain of linked hands slowly bending, folding, and reshaping itself into the outline of a star, without anyone ever letting go. Shape the Star is a quiet, focused cooperation game that works especially well for a group that needs to settle down after something louder.

What you need

Nothing but a group of at least 30 players, with enough open space to move.

How to play

Everyone holds hands to form a single long chain. The player at one end becomes the guide and is the only one allowed to keep their eyes open; everyone else can be asked to close theirs for an added challenge, or keep them open for an easier first attempt. Without ever releasing hands, the group works together, led by the guide’s instructions, to arrange the chain into the rough outline of a five-pointed star, sitting, standing, or lying down on the ground as needed to form each point. The rest of the group can call out suggestions to the guide as the shape comes together.

Safety notes

This needs real space to avoid anyone being pulled off balance, and it is worth going slowly. Rushing tends to cause more tangles than it solves. If the group is large, a second guide at the opposite end of the chain can help coordinate both ends at once.

Why it works

Because only the guide can see the full shape forming, everyone else has to trust instructions and communicate what they can feel and sense about their own position, which makes this a genuinely different kind of cooperation exercise than one where everyone can see the whole picture at once.
