Choose a theme, roll a die and see where the ideas lead. Word Rush is a quick vocabulary and idea-generation game you can play around a table, on a rug or while waiting for dinner.
Get ready
You need two or more players, paper theme cards and an optional die and timer. Try familiar themes such as the beach, things that roll or a rainy afternoon. An adult can write down answers for players who prefer speaking or signing. Keep dice and small pieces away from children who may mouth them.
How to play
- Choose one theme and read it aloud. Check that everyone understands it; unfamiliar vocabulary should not become a hidden obstacle.
- Roll the die to choose a target number of ideas, or simply agree on three. A team might name four things connected with a holiday: a bag, a train, a cousin and a picnic.
- Give the team time to think. Thirty seconds can be a lively challenge for an older group, but an untimed round is equally valid.
- Invite the next team to add different ideas to the same theme. Write or sketch the suggestions where everyone can see them.
- When someone offers an unexpected connection, ask how it fits. Accept a sensible explanation instead of insisting on the adult’s first interpretation.
- Change the theme when ideas slow down. Let players take turns choosing it.

- Cooperative: see how many different ideas everyone can gather together.
- Team challenge: count one point per relevant new idea and agree an ending before you start.
- Picture version: point to, draw or select images instead of finding words quickly.

Ask whether one answer reminded someone of another, or whether changing the theme made the game easier. A child who needs thinking time can contribute a strong idea later; quick recall is only one way to participate.
Keep themes welcoming. Avoid questions that require expensive holidays, particular family arrangements or private experiences. You can use the original theme download below, but a few topics suggested by the children are plenty to begin.
