Snatch and Dash: a numbered-sprint relay game

2 Min Read

A square of fabric held loosely between two lines of players, and one simple dare: snatch it and run before you’re tagged. Snatch and Dash rewards quick reflexes and a bit of nerve, and it tends to produce some of the loudest cheering of any game in this list.

What you need

A handkerchief, scarf, or small piece of cloth. Rope to mark three parallel lines. Up to 30 players, split into two equal teams.

How to play

Two teams line up facing each other, about two metres apart, with each player given a number matching an opposing player on the other team. A third line is marked exactly between the two teams, and the cloth-holder stands there, holding the cloth loosely by one corner. The cloth-holder calls out a number at random. The two players, one from each team, who have that number sprint forward, trying to snatch the cloth and get back to their own line without being tagged by the opposing player. Grabbing is only allowed at the cloth itself, not at the other player, and nobody may cross the middle line while reaching for it. A successful snatch-and-return scores a point; getting tagged while holding the cloth gives the point to the other team instead.

Safety notes

The middle-line rule exists specifically to prevent collisions, so it is worth enforcing firmly. Keep the gap between the two team lines wide enough that the two runners have real room to manoeuvre.

Why it works

Every single round has a genuine moment of suspense, since nobody knows which number will be called next, and the one-on-one sprint at the centre gives every player a clear, visible moment in the spotlight over the course of a game.
