A big open circle, a sponge ball, and two teams trying to knock each other out before the other side does. Firestorm Dodge is one of those games that needs almost nothing to set up and reliably gets an entire group moving within thirty seconds of starting.
What you need
A soft sponge ball or a similarly soft, safe-to-throw ball. Chalk, rope, or anything else to mark a circle roughly 10 metres across. A group of up to 30 players.
How to play
Mark out a circle on the ground. Split the group into two teams. One team stands inside the circle, the other stands outside it and cannot step in. Players outside the circle throw the ball to try to hit a player standing inside. If the ball hits someone without bouncing first, that player is out. If it bounces before hitting them, it does not count. The team inside keeps going until everyone has been eliminated, then the teams swap places and play again. Whoever eliminates the other team faster, or lasts longer as the inside team, wins.
A second version worth trying, the original one-circle elimination: rather than splitting into two teams, everyone starts inside the circle together and takes turns being “it,” throwing the ball from outside to eliminate players one at a time, until only one remains.
Variations
Play it as a best-of-three, with each team getting a turn inside the circle, and settle a tie with a simple one-on-one shootout: players line up facing each other a few metres apart and try to hit the opposing player, who is not allowed to move.
Safety notes
Use a genuinely soft ball, not anything hard or heavy, and set a clear rule against throwing at the head. For younger children, shrink the circle and slow the pace. This game works well as a mixed-gender activity, but it is worth letting the group weigh in on team composition if that matters in your setting.
Why it works
There is no waiting around in this one. Even players who are quickly eliminated get a role to play watching and cheering, and the game resets fast enough that a round rarely drags. It is a reliable opener for a group that needs to burn energy before settling into anything quieter.
