Cross-Field Catch: a two-half frisbee passing game

2 Min Read

Two teams, one frisbee, and a field split down the middle: keep it flying between your side and your teammates’ without ever letting it touch the ground. Cross-Field Catch is a simple passing game that works especially well outdoors on a breezy day.

What you need

A frisbee. A large open space, roughly 50×50 metres, divided into two halves and clearly marked. Up to 40 players, split into two teams.

How to play

Each team occupies one half of the field. The goal is to pass the frisbee back and forth between the two halves of your own team without it touching the ground. Every time the frisbee is dropped, the opposing team scores a point. To make it more challenging as the group gets comfortable with the basic game, shrink the number of players on each team, or enlarge the playing field, both of which make each catch harder to pull off cleanly.

Safety notes

Appoint one referee for each half of the field to make fair, consistent calls about drops and boundary crossings, since disputes over whether the frisbee touched the ground are common and easily avoided with a clear second set of eyes. Keep the field free of obstacles, since players will be watching the frisbee overhead rather than the ground underfoot.

Why it works

Because the frisbee’s flight is genuinely unpredictable compared with a thrown ball, this game rewards players who read the wind and anticipate rather than simply those who throw hardest, which tends to level the playing field across a wider range of ages and abilities than most team sports manage.
