The objective of this activity is to make the child more accustomed to different cultures around the world with infusion of some history as well.

Dresses / material from different cultures – these can also be created by participants

  1. Write down name of different countries on chits of paper.
  2. Ask each participant to pick one chit. The country in the chit would the country the participant has to represent.
  3. Ask the participants to explore and find out about the culture, dressing habits, food habits and some history of the country. Help the participants explore the knowledge about the cultures.
  4. Request the participants to come prepared on a particular day to represent the country. Each student has to wear a dress or an element of the dress that represents the country they have been assigned to. (Remember these elements can also be handmade by participants)
  5. On the designated day, allow the students to engage with each other to talk about their country and its people.
  6. Each participant will share about the assigned country. These are six elements they could say:
    a.     Greeting (hello) in the local language of the country
    b.     One dress item that belongs to the culture of the country
    c.     One interesting fact about the country’s history
    d.     One local food item that is popular in the country
    e.     One place to visit in the country
    f.      Demonstrate one dance step of the local dance from the country
  7. It is a win for everyone!
  1. Ask participants to define what culture means to them?
  2. Why is it important to understand and respect each other’s culture?
  3. Ask participants to reflect on which countries would they like to visit in future?
  4. We can also hit upon the effective use of communication. All this will assist them in building a better sense of knowledge, adherence and respect for people of different culture
  1. Have a world map in place to show the location of the country to participants
  2. It’s important that every participants gets opportunity to talk about their assigned country
  3. Make sure that participants understand that no culture is better than other and all cultures have their own value to society.
  4. Motivate and encourage reserved participants to speak up and share their thoughts as well

For example if a participant gets country United States of America, they can talk about

    • Greeting: hello! or Good Morning!
    • Dress: Suits / Jeans
    • Interesting History fact: The United States’ current 50 star flag was designed as a school project by 17 year-old Robert G. Heft. Heft received a B- for his efforts, but his teacher said he would reconsider the grade if Congress accepted Heft’s ostensibly mediocre design. In 1959, that’s precisely what happened, and Heft’s design was selected to be the latest iteration of the American flag. His teacher promptly changed the grade to an A.
    • Local Food Item: Apple Pie
    • Place to Visit: The Grand Canyon
    • Dance Step: Any American Waltz step
  1. Instead of different countries, one can also assign them the states of a single country.
  2. You can also participate in doing the dance step of that country to make it fun for participants
