What do I see? is an activity that helps increase observation and logical reasoning skills. In this activity a player selects an object from the surroundings, and the others have to guess the object based on the hints given.

  1. Select one player to become the 1st Agent.
  2. The Agent will select an object from their immediate surrounding or from the room. The Agent does not tell the other players what the object is.
  3. Next, the Agent thinks in their mind about the features of the object that can be given as hint to the other players so that they can guess the object. The features can be color, size, shape, function, first letter, similar sounding word, etc. of the object.
  4. The agent gives the first hint to the others. While giving the hint the agent uses the phrase ‘Tell me what do I see’ followed by the hint.
    • For example, if the object is a wooden table, then the agent’s hint could be ‘Tell me what do I see – It is something that has 4 legs’ or ‘Tell me what do I see – it is something that is brown’ or ‘Tell me what do I see – it is something that supports us while writing’, etc.
    • Tip for the Agent – Do not look directly at the object while giving a hint. Else, the others will follow your gaze and may guess the object immediately.
  5. Once a hint is given, the other players take time to look around and find the object. Each player gets a chance to tell their guess. The Agent will say yes or no to the guesses. If none of the players are able to guess the object, then the Agent provides a second hint.
    • for example: the 2nd hint for the wooden table could be ‘Tell me what do I see – it is something with a rectangular shape’.
  6. You can limit the no. of hints given between 2 and 5 depending on how complex or easy you want to make the game.
  7. Points – For every incorrect guess, a player gets -1 point. For every correct guess, +2 points.
  8. The player who guesses correctly first becomes the next Agent and the next round begins. If no one is able to make a correct guess, the same person continues as the Agent for the next round too.
  9. The player with most points wins the game.
  1. How did you feel as an investigator?
  2. Did asking questions help you?
  3. Is curiosity good?
  1. A facilitator’s role is to conduct the activity – put together the material, give instructions, ensure fairness and no cheating, keep time and score, ask reflection questions and summarise the learning. Any extra tasks will be mentioned in the other sections.
  2. In this activity, the facilitator (parent / teacher) should also participate as a player.
  3. Set up the activity like a game, to be fun. DO NOT make it stressful for the players such that they feel that they are being tested.

Hints:

  • 1st hint – “Tell me what do I see – it is something that has numbers all over it”
  • 2nd hint -“Tell me what do I see – it is something that has twelve pages”
  • 3rd hint -“Tell me what do I see – it is something that helps us remember holidays”

The above hints are for a Calendar.

  1. When playing with young children, parents can go first as the Agent so that the children can understand what is expected.
  2. When playing with even younger children, use objects that the child is familiar with and has already learnt the names of. You could place all the objects you want to use down on a mat in front of the child.
  3. We encourage you to share with us the variations you try in the comments section below.
